Santa, what's the perfect gift?

Christmas is just around the corner and there is one thing on everyone’s mind: what is the perfect gift? Whether it’s for parents, roommates or yourself, almost everyone is searching for gift ideas this season.

So what’s on your list this year?

Clothing and blankets seem to be a popular gift idea, especially with the cold winter weather. No idea what to get? Gift cards or “tear-jerker cards”, suggested by an anonymous student, are popular choices.

“Note that you can’t buy anything with a gift card that’s only $5,” said sophomore Anthony Pikkaraine.

Luke Kraft, also a sophomore, suggests, “Get things that people need, especially after college, like cups, pots, pans, silverware, etc”.

Personalized gifts are also a good choice. “I got my parents personalized Columbia sweaters that were awesome!” said Karlee Marg, a post-secondary student. Marg also recommends candy for students who aren’t sure what to get for their loved ones. “Everyone loves candy,” she said.

When searching for the perfect gift for that special someone, it’s helpful to reflect on gifts that have made your own Christmas special. Marg remembers she received “an iPod Touch with my name on the back one year. That was fun!”

“I got a puppy when I was seven, so, that was awesome,” said Shaffer.

Pikkaraine remembers receiving “toys, money, cards, sports equipment, movies, and [sic] video games.” Zehr has even received coal.

Sentimental gifts are always an excellent choice. “My dad gave me an old bow from when he a was kid that his father used that had a lot of hunting stories behind it. It still works and is over 40 years old,” said Kraft.

Regardless of the gift you choose to give this year, it’s always the thought behind it that counts.
