For many students at Saint Mary’s University, intramural sports are a big part of the college experience. Tessa Wagnild, director of intramurals, strongly believes that intramurals have a positive impact on any college campus.

“Intramural activities offer opportunities for students of all athletic abilities to stay active, de-stress, and be social in a fun, safe, and competitive environment,” said Wagnild. “With over 50 percent of the student body participating in at least one intramural activity last year alone, intramurals definitely plays an important role in core-curricular life on campus.”

The first of four sessions of intramural sports has come to an end, which included flag football, co-ed sand volleyball, ultimate frisbee and basketball. Additionally, there was a one-day 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The second session is currently running, with many teams already showing signs of fair play and sportsmanship in the disciplines of wiffleball, dodgeball and handball, which is in its first year as an intramural sport at SMU.

Wagnild explains that a simultaneous competition with intramurals is the race for the Cardinal Cup. This is a competition between all participating teams and is based on a point total from all four intramural sessions and one-day team tournaments.

“The point system awards points to teams for participating in each league, making playoffs, winning the league or playoffs, and for good sportsmanship scores. For a team to get points for multiple leagues and sessions they must keep the same team name and maintain a majority of the same players. In essence, the Cardinal Cup winner is the intramural team of the year,” said Wagnild.

The session one championship games results were:

Flag football: Team “Deuces” defeated Team “WWDQD” 34 to 26

Sand Volleyball: Team “Deuces” defeated Team “Safe Sets” 21-16 and 21-12

Ultimate Frisbee: Team “WWDQD” defeated Team “Deuces” 10 to 3

Basketball: Team “Gametime Killers” defeat ed Team “Shot Callers” 65 to 59

The one-day basketball tournament was another victory for “WWDQD”, defeating “Deuces” 11 to 8 in the championship game.
