Saint Mary’s University women’s basketball team continues to improve as it heads into the latter part of its season with a 15-3 overall record.

The Cardinals started with a season-opening six-game winning streak. Now, as the team heads into second semester, they are at it again with a seven-game winning streak.  After an electrifying game against Saint Thomas University on Jan. 23, the Cardinals continued to dominate the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) competition.

“Last year, we played better than the year before. We are now halfway through the season and we are already doing better than last year,” said Jenna Freudenberg, assistant women’s basketball coach.

The Cardinals picked up momentum this year and senior Jessica Thone helped with that as she hit her 1,000 career point mark. Thone achieved this high honor during the Cardinals’ win against Hamline University on Jan. 21.

The Cardinals plan on carrying the momentum with them throughout the rest of the season.

“We need to simply play our style and our game and outwork our opponents and then the results will speak for themselves,” said sophomore Octavia Brown.

According to Brown, the women’s basketball team appreciates every single fan as well as the enthusiasm they bring to the team’s competitions.
