Hot of the Prez: RAC concerns

By John Freeman
Student Senate President

With only six more weeks left in this semester, the Saint Mary’s University community is entering into more than just class project deadlines and grilling-out season. The budgeting season has begun for both the university and the student senate. Keeping that in mind, I’d like to point out the concern brought forth to the senate about lack of funding for the cardiovascular and weight-lifting equipment in the RAC.

The university currently has no annual budget set-up specifically for this area. As a result of this, countless students, faculty, and staff have requested capitol improvements from the senate to receive some sort of monies for the work-out equipment. I have to say that I really do not blame people for submitting these requests. The area is obviously under-funded by the university and yet it receives a high percentage of use by the entire SMU community.

The senate executive board recently composed a letter and sent it to the administration requesting funds specifically for this area. We have also met with members of the administration to discuss this matter. The senate is now waiting for the university’s response to this concern. In the mean time, I encourage everyone who reads this to push for more funding for the RAC work-out equipment. In doing this, hopefully we can make some changes and improvements to an area that we would benefit from as a community.
